What to look for in a body piercer...

1. The first thing you should look for when you enter a shop is the general cleanliness of the shop. Are the floors and counter clean? Ask to see the piercing area. Is it well lit and organized? It should look more like your doctor or dentists office than a night club.

2. Then look at the staff. Are they bathed and groomed? Are they friendly and knowledgeable? Did they answer your questions? If not did they get someone who could?

3. Does the shop use an autoclave or chem-clave? These are the only proven forms of sterilization (dry heat and chemical soaks are not acceptable forms of sterilization). If so can they show you the latest spore test results? These tests are to ensure that the equipment is working properly and should be done monthly.

4. Does the shop reuse needles? This is again unacceptable. Please ask to see the needle come out of a package and be discarded in a properly labeled biohazard container after its use.

5. Do they use piercing guns? Piercing guns can not be sterilized. Therefore making them unacceptable for any body piercings, even ear lobes.

6. Be sure that the studio has a large selection of jewelry to accommodate any piercing that is needed. Some shops will use what they have on hand even if the jewelry is inappropriate.

7. Does the shop have a thorough after care sheet? Will they be around or willing to answer any questions that you may have after the piercing?

8. Ask your friends where they got their piercings? Did they have a pleasant experience? Did they have any problems with the healing. If so could the shop help with any problems that might have arose?

9. Does the shop have reasonable age requirements? Younger people have a lot harder time caring for and healing a lot of body piercings. Some shops just want the money and do not really care that the child will probably end up with scars or infection.

10. Consider the price. Do you think professional's really work for some of the prices shops charge? No they don't. The people in these places are do-it-yourselfers who were probably trained by people like themselves. The only way they can offer such a good price is to use cheap jewelry and unskilled labor. Do not be fooled by that great deal. Or even this one: "All Piercing's $XX.XX " Sure the piercing is only that much, but the jewelry is an additional cost, and we're betting they let you pick the jewelry, insted of picking the BEST Jewelry for your NEW PIERCING, themselves. Perhaps its because they don't have a clue as to what they are doing, or how the Healing process works, and why it's better to use Rings and certain types of metal. (ie : Surgical Stainless Steel.) Do us all a favor and research your studio's.

11. My body piercer told me "Navels never heal."
Again, this is wrong. Chances are that person doesn't know anything what he/she is doing to YOUR body. They just want that quick cash, and really don't care about you at all. ALL PIERCINGS HEAL, some quicker then others. Depending on how YOU take care of it (first), Then if it was done correctly with the proper

equiptment & Skill. Again, if someone tells you it never heals, they are LIEING to you. We recommend you tell everyone you know, when something like this happens, so everyone knows they are NOT professional. It's the communitee's Right to know, where all the chop shops are, and word of mouth is the best form of advertising, for good or bad. Again, Take the time to research!
